Summary/Abstract: The first book on pregnancy, childbearing and childrearing in the Romanian medical literature was written in 1827 by the Greek doctor Nicolae Chiriacopol, who was then working at the hospital in Roman. Women were taught how to take care of themselves during and after their pregnancy and were given advices on how to raise their children. An aspect which is strongly emphasized in the book is the peril represented by midwifes because of their lack of any medical knowledge, which makes Nicolae Chiriacopol claim that authorities should found schools for their instruction.
