Summary/Abstract: In the past, there was no clear line between social sciences (and sociology in particular)and cognisant journalism. If such a line already existed after the full establishment ofsociology as an academic discipline, certain sociologists deliberately crossed it. The reasonwas, on one hand, an attempt to broaden the academic activity and gain the support forsocial reforms, and, on the other, an effort to provide quick and up-to-date informationon events both in society and the academic community. The article analyses such casesin the history of Czech sociology, specifically periodicals Kruh (1946–48), Veřejné mínění(1947–48), Zprávy ČSSS (1968–69) and Sociologické aktuality (1989–94). The author summarizesthe conditions for the existence of such “border” periodicals, describes their content, mission and social/disciplinary context of their existence in three periods in the history ofCzech sociology. He also shows why they cannot exist in the modern system of academicwork for a long time.
