Summary/Abstract: In the last few decades, the concept of empowerment has found its place in sociology as well as in other social science disciplines. The main aim of this article is to introduce the concept and to outline its main characteristics, which are important for its understanding, and to highlight some of the problems it creates. It also discusses the origin and development of empowerment, and the various academic disciplines in which it exists. Two possible directions of empowerment are discussed. In the second part of the article the role and development of empowerment in the social quality theory is examined. Social quality initiative is especially important for the further development of the empowerment concept since it represents one of the first attempts of conceptualisation and operationalisation of the concept at the macro level.
