Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to shaping the corps of prison staff in Volhynia and in Eastern Galicia in the years of 1918–1923. The formation of the prison staff took place in difficult political and material conditions. Firstly, the Polish authorities employed former penitentiary cadres who had served in local prisons during the times of the Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian empires. The management of prisons paid special attention to the loyalty of prison employees to the Polish state and their political views. The military experience of the prison staff also played an important role. In terms of nationality, in the years 1918–1923 the staff was composed of the Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, Jews, etc. Finally, as a result of the decisions of various personnel commissions, representatives of non-Polish nationality were gradually dismissed from service in the prison system, and the corps of prison employees in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia became monolithic Polish-Roman Catholic staff.
