Summary/Abstract: The article consists of two parts. The first part discusses the factors decisive for the role of women in the January Uprising (the decades-long tradition, elements of the non-violence strategy, the structure of the “underground state”, the partisan nature of the war), women’s organisations and forms of involvement, such as manifestations, canvassing and propaganda, clandestine works, armed struggle, intelligence, communication and supply of troops, health service, care for prisoners and insurgents’ families. The second part presents a social profile and activities of female participants of the uprising in a statistical perspective, on the basis of the inventory of Siberian exiles from the Kingdom of Poland by Z. Strzyżewska and the file of insurgents and exiles of 1863–1864 compiled at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. The author analyses the data of women repressed for participating in or supporting the uprising, 95 from the Kingdom of Poland and 2242 from the Lithuanian and Byelorussian territories of the former Commonwealth: age, territorial origins, social background, causes of the accusation, forms of activity (according to the indictment), forms of punishment, places of stay in exile. The text is accompanied by 11 summary tables.
