Summary/Abstract: Operational dimension of European cooperation in the field of security and defence developed gradually as the main reflection of the significant progresses achieved by EU in the last decades. So far, almost 40 operations and missions, both military and civilian, were deloyed in various areas in the world with different tasks and objectives. Today, around 5,000 military and civilian personnel are participating in different operational commitments conducted by EU in three continents. These figures are impressive, indicating significant consolidation of EU potential to contribute in the field of crisis management along the lines provided by EU Treaty and EU Global Strategy. Wihin this framework, institutional architecture responsible for management of security and defence evolved gradually since 1999 to become nowadays one of the most complex and comprehensive component of this project. It reflects, equally, the intergovernmental nature of Common Security and Defence Policy in which international profile is correlated with member states prerogatives in this area. At the same time, the relevance of institutional set-up is underpinned also by an increasing efficiency, especially on providing adequate framework to support the operational deployments worldwide. Obviously, it is a process still in full motion, having potential to generate novative institutional formulas to improve the overall management of operational commitments.
