Summary/Abstract: NATO and People’s Republic of China are not adversaries nor are they security partners, but since the USA is the strongest ally within the Trans-Atlantic alliance (from a military point of view) and there is a growing systemic competition between Washington and Beijing, the NATO members are anxious about Chinese geopolitical and geoeconomic penetration in the Arctic, the Balkans, Northern Africa and Middle East areas. The main threat on the long term is the scenario of a Russia-China alliance which could rise a powerfull challenge for NATO and its member states, by radically changing the global balance of power and increasing the risk of a wide-scale military standoff. Not all the European NATO members are ready to support Washington in its increasingly zero-sum competition with China. This explains why the Americans prefer to build regional security and political cooperation formats like the QUAD and AUKUS for containing China’s rise.
