Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyse the issue of self-interpretation concerning the person and the formula of “strong valuing” in Charles Taylor’s conception. The cognition of one’s own ”self” takes place in the context of discovering and realizing the values inscribed in cultural tradition, language, and the meanings associated with it. In the thought of the Canadian philosopher, one can point to the relation between the structure of the world of values and the concept of person. On the one hand, thanks to values, a person interprets the meaning of his actions; on the other hand, values define a “community of meanings”; they allow for a dialogue between persons. The social recognition of values such as the dignity of the human person and respect for the other makes it possible to create rules for understanding. From the recognition of these values, we can also identify the causes of misunderstanding and articulate the difference of individual attitudes and views to the narratives dominating the cultural message. A person’s sensitivity to the world of values is mediated through cultural expression and conversation about moral attitudes and behaviours. Taylor’s concept is an interesting attempt to combine reflections from value theory, philosophy of man, and philosophy of culture.
