Summary/Abstract: Even before the spreading of the Covid 19 pandemic, USA and China were engaged in a dangerous geopolitical and economic game, each of them wanting to be number one in the international system and prevent the other to do the same. The current medical and economic crisis showed that Washington and Beijing are more enclined to increase their rivalry and try to expand its economic and strategic assets, instead of puttin g aside rivalry for a time and cooperating for a common management of the huge economic and human consequences of the pandemic. Thus, the world lacks a global leadership and the electoral-domestic factors in both the USA and China tend to become more important than the mere international affairs calculations.
