Summary/Abstract: EU is facing multiple challenges and threats in the last ten years, from mass migration and terrorism to the Russian and Chinese geostrategic penetration in Europe and the future Brexit. But during its more than a half century history, it has survived lots of challenges and become even stronger. The internal troubles related to the single market and power conflicts among different political wings are enhanced by the neighboring countries’ activities and strategies, while the enlargement process seems to have been stopped for a long time to come. In order to escape dismemberment scenarios or an irrelevant existence, the European leaders and public opinion must accept the importance of positive compromise and accept painful institutional reforms, preparing the Union for more integration and a global role.
