Summary/Abstract: In the spring of this year, Ukraine entered, in an atmosphere marked by major national socio-economic and security difficulties, in the 5th year of the confrontation with Russia. Five years since he lost the Crimean Peninsula, probably forever, five years since it was captured in a war with the Donbass separatists, politically, militarily and economically supported by Moscow, five years since it developed reforms in all areas. Five years in which Ukraine has simply changed its profile. Solving any state-level problem involves, at present and in the foreseeable future, many unknown interference variables of Russia. New challenges and vectors of confrontation with Russia appear - the Azov Sea front, or the war of political and economic sanctions with Moscow. Slow reforms and the economy are unable to support the construction of the military capabilities and structures needed to discourage Russia. The West offers Ukraine some political, economic and military support. But the lack of any progress in negotiating solutions to regulate the problems between Kiev and Moscow does not give up optimism. It remains to be seen if the new elected president, Volodimir Zelensky, will find the right ways for Ukraine to become a success story.
