Summary/Abstract: Íslendingasögur (The sagas of Icelanders) are, along with Codex Regius, Snorri’s Edda and Saxo Grammaticus’ Gesta Danorum, valuable primary sources on the superstitions and witchcraft in the Scandinavian and Icelandic Iron Age and Middle Ages. Vatnsdæla saga (The Saga of the People of Vatnsdal), written in the second half of the thirteenth century is undoubtedly the richest when describing rituals of magic and encounters with the supernatural. The aim of this paper is to map and analyse the magical practices and supernatural phenomena narrated in Vatnsdæla saga, comparing, where appropriate, with similar phenomena described in other sagas of Icelanders.
