Summary/Abstract: The article examines in depth the arguments of Tzvetan Todorov, as presented in his book L'homme dépaysé, describing them in the context of T. Todorov's studies since 1989, which are focused on the universal meaning of morality and on the author's civic stand on the major issues of our times. The author of this article approaches the book critically, discussing it in the context of T. Todorov's ideas on human nature, freedom, morality, and culture. The personal grounds of difference and the possible basis of relativism, one of the targets of criticism in L'homme depaysé, are discussed. The author argues against the basic interpretation, offered in the book, of man's object environment, of the relation between individual and community; he perceives the individual and the community as standing in relations of complex interference, and moral rules as something that cannot be defined as intrinsically good. Morality is of limited effectiveness and is naturally supplemented by a number of other regulators of human intercourse.
