Summary/Abstract: The modern food system is dynamic and faces a number of challenges - on the one hand it does not provide enough good nutrition for all people and at the same time it puts serious pressure on the environment. The world's sustainable development policies have identified a crucial role for agriculture and the food system in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Taking a holistic approach to sustainability allows synergies and trade-offs to be sought to ensure that the overall impact of food production, processing, distribution and supply is positive for the whole system. Addressing the transition to sustainable food systems and sustainable production systems in agriculture involves a long-term perspective and the practices embodied in the agroecological approach are increasingly recognised as having the potential to transform food production to achieve the goals of sustainable development and a sustainable food system. Adopting an agroecological approach has a number of benefits, including: increasing the productivity and efficiency of farming systems; reducing rural poverty; contributing to improve food security and safe diets; and contributing to adaptation to climate change. The agroecological approach comprises ten elements and thirteen principles, compliance with which helps to overcome the economic, social and environmental problems of farmers, agroecosystems and the food system as a whole. The European Union has given a special vocation to the agroecological approach, which is at the heart of the European Green Pact and of agriculture and food policy and is increasingly being integrated with other policies.
