Summary/Abstract: As 1989 drew to a close, the party-state and state socialism gradually ceased to exist in both a legal and everyday sense. After a 40-year detour, Hungary returned to the path marked out by István Széchenyi, Lajos Kossuth and Ferenc Deák, the nineteenth-century founding fathers of the Hungarian parliamentary state.
