Summary/Abstract: In 1897, the British surgeon Charles Ryan published his memoirs entitled Under the Red Crescent about the Russian-Turkish war 1877 - 1878, emphasizing the military virtues of the Ottoman soldiers due to their natural genius for fortification and the practically unlimited supply of ammunition. The author also confirmed that it was the Romanians who played an instrumental role in the capture of the Grivitza redoubt on September 11th (August 30th) and not the Russians.
