Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the meaning and the usage of the word ‘moustache’ and its derivatives in the medieval Slavonic literature. A little more than 20 examples were extracted from original and translated Old and Middle Bulgarian, Russian and Serbian texts and were studied in terms of their context and Greek sources. In most of them, there is no visible distinction between ‘moustache’ and ‘beard’, they translate mainly Greek words meaning ‘beard’ and usually refer to youth. The examples show that the moustache was perceived either as an inseparable part of the beard, or as the first growth of facial hair, a symbol of youth and coming of age.
