Different Faces of Prawda (‘Truth’). On Historical Sources of Metatextual Uses of the Word Prawda

Summary/Abstract: The author focuses on metatextual uses of the word prawda. She assumes that this kind of occurrences is rooted in the object language, and for this reason she presents the initial uses of prawda in a metatextual meaning. The analysis leads to a conclusion that both metatextual meanings (metatextual comment and sentence-related comment) have arisen as a result of the elision process; whereas prawda as an interlude is derived from parenthesis. Prawda from the metalanguage plane plays the role of pragmatic marker providing information on the attitude of the sender of the message. The described meaning could be considered as a result of the grammaticalization process.
