Summary/Abstract: The paper refers to research on the linguistic description of space, the anthropological interpretation of spatial relations and its linguistic exponents in Polish. The subject matter of the analysis is one of the basic spatial oppositions: near-far. The main aim of the article is to present the problem of cognitive ambiguity of linguistic spatial categorization: both their cognitive clarity as well as their relativity and fuzzy boundaries. The issue is discussed on the basis of dictionaries of contemporary Polish and selected texts.
