Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the history of plague in the East Carpathian area in the 15th century and the second half of the 19th century. The principalities were exposed to the risk of contamination from commercial transactions and military operations. Between 1400 and 1800 in the Romanian Principalities some serious epidemic waves evolved. In Moldova and Wallachia, the disease spread mainly during the wars, being brought by the occupation troops and the crews of the merchant vessels. So between 1768 and 1830 the plague became almost endemic. Since the 19th century there have been more effective sanitary measures to fight the disease, especially during the Russian administration of General Kiseleff. The press begins to publish tips for treating the disease, and a whole memoir literature is dedicated to the scourge. The cholera was manifested after 1873, but not with the same intensity and extent as before.
