Summary/Abstract: Year 1923, which is the date of the proclamation of the republic, signifies not only the change of political history, but also the transition to a new era in the study of art and culture. The main purpose of the Republic of Turkey is to establish a brand new nation state with the concept of a new citizen. In doing so, the state has attached a very special importance to its cultural policies. Together with the fast cultural change experienced in the new Republic of Turkey established after the proclamation of the republic; Ataturk, who attached a big importance to the culture and art for the realization of modernization in the fields of economic, social, politics and culture, encouraged artists from every field and provided them with facilities where they can work comfortably. All artistic activities such as sending students to Europe, establishing Community Centers, opening a State Gallery of Painting and Sculpture were supported. Ataturk, not wanting the Turkish nation to fall behind the level of contemporary civilizations in the area of fine arts, was a pioneer in the developments related to sculpture, music, stage arts, architecture, painting, etc., and regulated the studies governmentally in this regard by establishing the State Conservatory. The fact that Westernization efforts directly determined the developments in the fine arts caused the fields of theater, music, etc. in a Western sense to come to the forefront, and resulted in the fact that traditional Turkish arts remained more in the background both in music and in other traditional art branches. However, although Western forms are preferred as a structural feature in the field of culture/art, Turkish cultural values have been tried to be preferred as the content.
