Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to explore the vital and characteristic spirit that permeates the whole Franciscan philosophy and guarantees its unity. Really to be true to its name, a Franciscan philosophy must be a methodical inquiry by natural reason into problems supposedly philosophical. As such, Franciscan philosophy shares with any philosophy the same problems, methods and means; hence, it must be a natural and scientific investigation of the natural problems of mankind. However, it differs from other philosophies inasmuch as it conducts this investigation in a Franciscan spirit. In view of clear, historical facts, it can be said that this spirit manifests itself in a critical, scientific, progressive, and practical philosophy. This characterization, admittedly, is open to further additions; but the qualifications just mentioned, although not necessarily the only ones, are themselves truly Franciscan.
