Summary/Abstract: The years 2016 and 2017 in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) were characterised by five main processes: the war in Syria, the fight of the international coalition with the terrorist organisation, the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), fluctuations in migration in the region and to Europe, qualitative changes of governments in Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, as well as a rivalry of regional powers. Each of these processes had non-regional implications.
