Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to summarize in brief two main hypotheses on etymology of Latin word vinum ‘wine’. First explanation reads vinum as a Wanderwort, thus as a borrowing, while the second defines it as a part of inherited lexicon. The article compares both explanations and gives them some more arguments based on their semantic features. In my opinion it is not possible to an- swer, which one is correct, when using a method of internal reconstruction (structural). This is why the text ends inconcluded, leaving place for addenda given by extra-linguistic material.
