Summary/Abstract: The study explores the origins and the general perspective of the first theoretical directions for a structured representation of the vocabulary. Therefore, the most important fact is the strict orientation on the linguistic perception of the designated realities, a principle first stated by Heyse. Another topic of the study is the discussion of the Saussure’s distinction between a general vision on the organization of the vocabulary (i.e. ”famille associative”) and a more restricted one, strictly form a linguistic perspective, where the organization is based on what Saussure calls ”une communauté de sens seulement” (i.e. ”rapports associatifs”). This distinction is not taken into consideration by Trier who continues the general view (influenced by Humboldt) and neither by the E. Coseriu’s disciple, Horst Geckeler, who just ignore it. The present observations represent a contribution both in terms of understanding the ‘lexical field’ concept, but also in terms of degree of linguistic appropriateness of the different points of view in the study of the vocabulary of a language.
