Summary/Abstract: A quater of buildings on the corner of Muitinės and Aleksoto streets in Kaunas was transfered to Kaunas Hospital in the secod half of the 19th century. Due to the lack of funds the Hospital was handed over to the Health Department in 1919 and it has become an important for the whole country, high-profile inpatient care institution with about 200–250 beds. Research on the hospital‘s activities in resent years has been enriched by the hospital‘s director‘s Jonas Staugaitis documents archive which belong to the Lithuanian Museum of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy. These documents and other archival and literature sources reveal the hospital‘s activities in 1919–1925 in detail. Based on them in this study we identified the most important difficulties which prevented the provision of adequate inpatient health care, financial problems. We also rewied the efforts to improve its material situation and meet the sanitary and hygiene requirements for health care institutions.
