Summary/Abstract: The concept of sustainable development crystallized in time, over several decades, in scientific debates at international level and has acquired specific political valences in the context of globalization. European Union has adopted the concept of sustainable development as political goal since 1997, by including it in the Maastricht Treaty. In 2001, the Gothenburg European Council adopted the Sustainable Development Strategy of the European Union, which was added an external dimension in Barcelona in 2002. Monitoring development trends, using indicators located outside the economic activity, is before formulating the principles of sustainable development and asserted together with the process of defining sustainable development strategies - elaborated under the aegis of United Nations and European Union.
