Summary/Abstract: The food, as well as the hunger and satiation, had a symbolic meaning, both in laic, but especially in religious life. After the XVIIIth century, there were some important changes concerning the appropriate and healthy nourishment: some of the ordinary aliments (wine, beer etc.) were no longer used, because of their profane attributes, while others (tea, cocoa, coffee etc.) were widely used because of their special taste and nutritional qualities. The basic rules of the Transylvanian church, including those concerning the nourishment, were set by the documents of the religious union from 1700 and soon after; those rules established, in fact, the difference between Romanian Christians and the others. In order to understand and reveal the clergy rules of eating during the XVIIIth century, we have to consider three types of sources: the list of purchase; narrative documents of the age; the official church law.
