Summary/Abstract: The Enlightenment, as a social, cultural, political etc. movement, is seen from a temporal view; the study reffers to the entire period between the early Enlightenment, at the beginning of the XVIIIth century, up to the late Enlightenment, after 1800. There was a specific age of the Enlightenment and a specific rhythm, according to the time and space the movement has been developed in. It is undeniable that the evolution of the Enlightenment has been influenced by the historical conditions and social realities of each country; thus, there is a French Enlightenment, an English one, a German one etc., each of them having specific features. The Romanian Enlightenment had its own national characteristics; it was based on the orthodox culture and the fight for national rights; its influence is still active at the beginning of the XIXth century.
