The Beginnings of the Mures County Library. Dr. Molnár Gábor - the First Manager of the Institution

Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the foundation and the first years of the public library of Târgu-Mureş, covering the period between 1911 and 1914, and aspects of the life and work of its first manager, dr. Molnár Gábor. At that time, there were several libraries in Târgu-Mureş, the most famous being the Teleki Library. However, the local council and the major, dr Bernády György considered that a modern public library was needed. The beginning of the 20th century was a period of great progress for the town, new monumental buildings had been raised. One of them, the Palace of Culture was meant to lodge a number of cultural institutions, among them the public library. This is only a small part of a greater research that hopefully will end in a monography of dr. Molnár. Local periodicals proved to be a valuable source in our research, thus completing our knowledge about the subject. Little was known about dr. Molnár’ s personal life. We found out that not only was he married, but he also had two daughters and a grand-daughter. Jurist and retired from a successful carrier in local administration, dr. Molnár Gábor became a professional librarian and a very good manager of the library for 23 years. The study presents his conception about the purpose of the public library, namely in bringing culture and knowledge in the life of all people, with a special concern to youth and the growing number of workers. An other important aspect is to reveal dr. Molnár’ s ideas about the concrete tasks in the every day work in a library: the book acquisition policy, the organization of the departments, the catalogue system, the rules of the library. He considered that an important role of a local library was to collect information, books, periodicals and all kind of printings by local authors and about the town. His name remains strongly tied with the foundation of the library.
