Summary/Abstract: Gheorghe Şincai is a representative example of what we may call „a man of his age.” Through his beliefs, his activity and works, he became some kind of a „datum point” of Romanian Enlightenment. Şincai spent a lot of his time reading the collections of different famous librairies, such as the Italian Sopra la Minerva, Vaticana, Benedictina etc., but also the books that he could find at the Library of „Santa Barbara” College from Vienna and, of course, the books, documents and manuscripts that could be found in Romanian librairies – private, or those of some educational institutions. As it was expected, he had a library of his own; M. Tampa, who studied it, considered that it emphasised his domains of interest. Şincai speaks about the role the library and books have played in his life in one of his works, Elegia; he used to spend almost all day long in librairies reading what the others were not interested to read, finding something in order to help his people.
