Summary/Abstract: The history of the Romanians from Transylvania is closely connected to culture, as a means of fighting for political, national and social rights. During the XVIIIth and the XIXth centuries, Romanians have tried to use the power of information in order to manage this fight; thus, the interest for spreading knowledge within the ordinary people increased. There are many cultural associations that were founded and some of them have understood the role of library, which is the place the information can be stored. So far, we have identified some different cathegories of libraries - such as public libraries, specialized libraries, particular libraries - but they all have the same purpose, the same objectives: to offer free acces to information, to contribute to the education of all people and to use what was already known about cultural and historical values of our past.
