Summary/Abstract: The present article deals with the question of whether it is even possible to conduct a scientific discussion in the field of German literature with low proficiency level students in their first year of study and proposes an answer in the form of a didactic approach, the focus of which is an overview of the German literary periods. This didactic approach is aimed at students in their first year of studying German Studies (German as a Foreign Language) and it should be understood as an argument for the fact that literary language is also appropriate for communicative foreign language teaching, even in the case of a low proficiency level of the learners. Learners’ needs are central to the teaching process and should be taken into account by setting suitable learning objectives and by adjusting the discourse to the A1 level (according to CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
