Summary/Abstract: Within the framework of word formation theory this article describes the process of derivation and the resulting derivatives by using the category of nouns with the suffix -heit with variants -keit and – igkeit, e.g.: wahr + -heit → e Wahrheit, dunkel + heit → e Dunkelheit, verlegen + -heit → e Verlegenheit etc. This suffix is very productive in German for the formation of new forms. The Croatian equivalents of this derivative can be divided into three groups: derivatives with the most common suffix -(n)ost, simplexes and word groups., e.g.: Wahrheit = istinitost, istina, Dunkelheit = mrak, Verlegenheit = neugodan poloţaj.. The aim of the contrastive analyses was to find out how compatible the two languages are in this word formation process, especially with regard to a strong inclination towards word formation in German.
