Summary/Abstract: This paper is based on an overview of hillfort culture in the inner Sarajevo area and how it evolved into Mediterranean-type urbanity following the establishment of Roman rule. Several dozen hillfort settlements have already been identified in the inner Sarajevo area, dating from the Neolithic to the Roman period. Some were of particular importance for the local populace and remained in use for long periods. Foremost among these is the complex of settlements at Zlatište, Debelo Brdo and Soukbunar, which was of great importance for Upper Bosnia. Known to have been settled continously for two millennia, this complex was probably the economic, cultural, communications, social and very likely also the political centre of the Upper Bosnian region. It could thus be connected with centre of the Illyrian Daesitiates tribe that is corroborated by epigraphic sources. The findings set out in this paper suggest that the inner Sarajevo region has been settled for several millennia, though it has been known by different names at different times.
