Summary/Abstract: The authors treat an interesting phenomenon in Bulgarian nowadays subculture – the so called democassettes, that can be seen in the market-places of the capital. Democassettes, pirates, rerecordings – these are different names of musical audiocassettes, which are on sale for already 15 (or even more) years on Sofia’s music market. The democassettes can be recognized by several main features: lack of cover, lack of list of contents, handwritten inscription, amateur quality of the recording. The article points out the most popular folk music performers, spread around through democassettes. A short review of the democassettes’ contents is made and characteristics are given of the producer and the seller, of the consumer and the buyer of such kind of an article. At last, giving an outline of the nowadays state and of the tendencies in the development of the democassettes, the authors insist that the article is only the first step in the study of this interesting ethnomusicological problem.
