The Preslav Version of the Gospel Translation into Old-Bulgarian by Cyril and Methodius

Summary/Abstract: The work is dedicated to a very important problem of Old-Bulgarian studies: the Preslav version of the Gospel translation into Old Bulgarian by Cyril and Methodius, which appeared around the beginning of the 10th century, and the lexical specificities of this translation. No gospel manuscript reflecting fully the results of this editing has come to us but, nevertheless, traces of the editing work of the Preslav men of letters are discovered in later Middle-Bulgarian, Old-Russian and Old-Bulgarian transcripts. The study is based on lexical material from 35 gospels, seven Epistles, many Old Testament books and fifteen non-biblical works in the 11th-14th century transcripts. A comparative method is used to differentiate 125 lexemes typical of the Preslav variant, which are alphabetically ordered by the lexicographic principle. This lexical material gives grounds for the hypothesis that the Preslav men of letters consciously altered part of the original lexical material used in the gospel by Cyril and Methodius. The changes cannot be entirely explained by the traditional views accepted in science about the slow and gradual accumulation of changes of a dialectal nature, or partial sporadic corrections. Parallel with the accidental lexical substitutions that have taken place under the pen of the different transcribers, in the evangelical text there are also such substitutions which result from conscious and purposeful editorial work. The Preslav version of the Gospel translation by Cyril and Methodius is part of the literary tradition in those days, built on the unity between the two major Old-Bulgarian literary schools – in Preslav and in Ohrid. The Preslav men of letters used the Old-Bulgarian language of Cyril and Methodius and the Preslav texts were incorporated in the unified and commonly accepted Old-Bulgarian literary language.
