AN ANALYSIS OF THE TURKISH TRANSLATION OF AFRO-AMERICAN NOMENCLATURE

Summary/Abstract: Throughout history, racial designations such as “Negro”, “nigger”, “niggah”, “black”, “African-American” and “Afro-American” have been used in the English language to refer to black Americans. Some of these designations are neutral, but others carry derogatory connotation. Being an African-American writer herself, Toni Morrison also designated blacks in a number of ways in her novels. This study argues that there are considerable connotational discrepancies in the racial nomenclature between the first translations and retranslations of Morrison’s The Bluest Eye (1970) and Sula (1973) into Turkish and that the texts published in the same period tend to show a similar pattern regarding lexical choices. The extracts from the source and the target texts have been analyzed in accordance with textual-linguistic norms put forward by Gideon Toury. As a result of this analysis, it has been found that the designations in the retranslations have been rendered in a more neutral way since the translators have taken into consideration the connotational meanings associated with the source culture.
