Summary/Abstract: Studies conducted so far have revealed that fertility is influenced by many economic, political, and cultural factors. However, the studies cannot explain why fertility indicators are getting worse in European countries. Negative changes are observed even in countries where the situation had begun to improve at the beginning of the 21st century. An assumption is made that decisions with long term consequences are closely related to uncertainty regarding the future. Uncertainty caused by social factors is barely studied, so it is not known how exactly it influences childbearing-related decisions. The object of this article is factors of social uncertainty that are faced during reproductive years. The aim of the study is to present the results of data analysis based on the sociological perspective of liquid modernity by Zygmunt Bauman. The data was collected during a sociological qualitative research study “Families and Inequalities”, conducted as a part of a scientific project “Families, Inequalities and Demographic Processes”. Biographical interviews with the cohorts of 1970–1984 revealed that it is already possible to notice certain features common to societies of liquid modernity which can influence decisions regarding childbearing, though they are not dominant.
