Theological and Secular Meanings about Freedom of Conscience in Fantasia über „Ein' feste Burg” Op.1. No. 2 by Rudolf Lassel

Summary/Abstract: The struggle for freedom of conscience has been present in all historical periods and has manifested itself in various active attitudes (opposition and struggle) or passive manners (resistance and isolation) and in many forms of expression, including social movements (revolts), economic blockades (boycott), political decisions (declarations, conventions or laws), religious manifestations (spiritual events) or works of art (music, painting, literature, etc.). Of all the forms through which the desire for freedom is expressed, art remains not only an option that offers multiple possibilities, but also a mediator between all other means. The choral „A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” („Ein' feste Burg Ist Unser Gott”) is a very strong argument in this regard. In this article, we will show some aspects that reveal both the symbolic richness through which freedom is expressed in this choral, especially freedom of conscience, and the major influence that this musical work had on famous composers like Giacomo Meyerbeer, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Max Reger, Johann Pachelbel or Johann Gottfried Walter, who wrote works choosing this score as their theme, Fantasia über „Ein' feste Burg” op.1. no. 2 by Rudolf Lassel being analyzed in detail in this text. The success of this choral and its significance for a free and positive experience of the human soul remain an incontestable testimony that art can express uniquely and in any historical context the desire and need for human freedom.
