Summary/Abstract: The catacombs are still seen today in a mythological light, as places of worship and refuge for persecuted Christians before the time of Constantine the Great. In reality, from the beginning, they were burial places, necropolis used by pagans and Jews, as well as by Christians. The present article shows how using of the catacombs evolved in the first centuries of Christianity and what was their contribution to the genesis of a Christian art.
