Summary/Abstract: On February 18, the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, convened in the memorial Cathedral of St Sabbas [Sava] in Belgrade, elected His Eminence Porphyrios Perić, Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana, as the 46th patriarch of theSerbian Orthodox Church. At 59 years old, Patriarch Porphyrios succeeds PatriarchIrinej, deceased in November 2020, aged 90.In his first address delivered after the election as head of the Serbian OrthodoxChurch, Patriarch Porphyrios stated: „It is with deep humility, awe and respect, thatI accept my elevation on St Sabbas’ throne (...) I pray to God and ask you all to support me, so that I may carry the great responsibility now placed on my shoulders in joy and, as the 46th patriarch and the 57th prelate of our Church, be a humble successor of my holy predecessors”.On the election of Patriarch Porphyrios as Primate of the Serbian OrthodoxChurch, Romania’s Patriarch sent him a congratulatory message.The solemn Liturgy for the enthronement of the new Serbian patriarch took place on Friday, February 19, one day after his election, in the „Holy Archangel Michael ”Patriarchal Cathedral, Belgrade. During the sermon delivered on this occasion, the patriarch of Serbia reminded that the mission of the Church is to build peace.Patriarch Porphyrios, one of the most prominent clergymen and intellectuals of today’s Serbia, has an extremely wide circle of friends and supporters within and without his country. He maintains personal relationships of friendship and cooperation cooperation with clergy and representatives of other Churches and religious communities.The event was also attended by the president of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, by prime minister Ana Brnabić and by other officials.
