Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the problem of repulsion in Michel Houellebecq’s prose by discussing Polish and French critical texts. The author poses two main questions: why does Houellebecq’s prose evoke repulsion in the first place? Is the category of the abject useful to the writer? In what way? Four levels on which repulsion can be experienced during reading are distinguished and analyzed: the linguistic layer of the novel, the characters’ behavior, the created world order, and Houellebecq’s public persona. The author adopts a sociological and anthropological perspective. Thus, she looks primarily at the cultural framework in which Houellebecq’s work, literary criticism, and the voice of the writer function.
