A few considerations on the materials and the execution techniques of the painting from wooden churches. Preparation layer – material properties and forms of deterioration

Summary/Abstract: This paper brings to the attention of the restorers, some issues on the materials and techniques used in the mural paintings from Romanian wooden churches. Data collected form reference publications – books of painting recipes and papers – can provide some clarity in respect to the relation between the characteristics of the original materials and deterioration phenomena. This paper represents a synthesis of the most known publications on the painting technique and thus can be considered a starting point for a more profound research initiative on the preparation layer of the mural paintings from wooden churches.
