Summary/Abstract: The treatise De amore (On courtly love) (ca. 1180) by Andres Capellanus is one of the central texts of medieval literature. Created in the court of Mary of Champagne, the text follows the tradition of the antient artes amatoriae (‘arts of love’). It is focused on the nature, the features, and the rules of development of love relationships as they were pictured in the courtly culture in medieval Western Europe. The present first Bulgarian translation presents two sections of the text: the theoretic opening of the treatise, modelled as a scholastic discussion on the essence of love; and the final section of the second book, where a romance narrative appears, telling the story of the knight Brito who is the first to receive the Rules of Love through courage and virtue.
