Summary/Abstract: During the last two decades, the Polish village has changed significantly and is no longer associated with producing mostly agricultural stock. Nowadays, rural areas start to play the whole range of extra-agricultural functions, connected to both production and services. However, the diversification pace of agricultural economyis relatively slow, especially in eastern Poland, and farmers constitute the constantly diminishing group of the rural community. Thus, the agricultural policy in Poland should be entirely separated from the policy of multifunctional development. Additionally, economic animation of small towns would significantly influence the development of the surrounding rural areas. The picture of young people leaving the village should be an alarming signal to find new, presently still unknown stimuli boosting extra-agricultural activities. Although multifunctional development is not the only solution to the problems of the Polish village, it is still a huge chance and a proper way leading to the betterment of village residents’ life conditions and welfare, as well as the countermeasure against the depopulation process in the rural areas.
