Summary/Abstract: The millennial experience in the practice of acupuncture techniques comes from Asia. It is then modified by Western medicine and in this form returns to the East. The Asian acupuncture style reached the Western world before 1966 and established itself as a complementary therapy in medical practices in Europe and the United States. As a result of the adaptation of recipes to the expectations of the Western patient, acupuncture, common in classical Chinese medicine, has been modified by the West into a style, which is now practiced by modern Traditional Chinese Medicine. Based on the indications for clinical application of acupuncture, its implementation in Bulgaria was initially in the field of neurology, and later on in other medical specialties - allergology, dermatology and ophthalmology. Currently, acupuncture is practiced in our country, both in the departments of physical therapy and rehabilitation, and in offices and centres for Eastern/Chinese medicine, with or without funding from the National Health Insurance Fund. The aim of this article is to trace the pervasion of acupuncture from the East to the Western world. The contribution of Western medicine, and in particular of Bulgarian science and practice, to the modification of the ancient Eastern acupuncture techniques and their practice today is presented. The medical and legal problems of the application of acupuncture in Bulgarian conditions are presented. Emphasis is placed on the increased interest of Bulgarian patients in acupuncture techniques, appointed and performed in an academic environment by trained acupuncturists. The experience of the University Centre for Eastern Medicine, Medical University-Varna (UCEM-MU-Varna) in postgraduate acupuncture training is shared, as well as the impact that this process gives on the demand for acupuncture medical service by Bulgarian patients.
