Summary/Abstract: The retinal complications of diabetes were first described by Eduard Jaeger in 1856 and the work of Edward Nettleship in 1872 provided the histopathologic evidence for the causal relationship between the two conditions. In 1876 Wilhelm Manz described the proliferative form of the disease with the characteristic tractional components. The introduction of insulin and the oral antidiabetic therapy increased the longevity of the patients that allowed the development of advanced retinopathy and sharp rise of vision loss in the middle of the 20th century. The invention and dissemination of laser treatment , pharmacotherapy and pars plana vitrectomy in clinical practice , and the advent of mass screening programs for diabetic retinopathy in the 80ties significantly improved the visual prognosis of the diabetics, however there are major inequalities in the quality of care due to social and economic barriers to timely diagnosis and full-range management in real life.
