Summary/Abstract: Until the accession of Prince Ferdinand (1887) the secular life of society and the everyday life of the princely court were simple and unpretentious. This style corresponded to the style of the head of state, Prince Alexander I of Bulgaria (born Prince Battenberg). With the arrival of the Prince of Coburg in the Balkans began an era of intensive Europeanization, approaching Western models and an attempt at protocol legitimization of the new state. As the great-grandson of the Sun King Louis XIV, Ferdinand attempted to introduce unfamiliar relations into an egalitarian state, to bring incomprehensible relations, protocol and etiquette among the heirs of the Bulgarian peasants and artisans. Somewhat comically, but in any case with an eye to Europe, Ferdinand I also set secular life in Bulgaria on a new path: a little pompous, a little old-fashioned, but one that finally distanced Bulgaria from its Ottoman past.
