Macedonian Opposition Seeks to Win Back Older Members, but still Lacks Direction

Summary/Abstract: The determination of Macedonia’s opposition leader Branko Crvenkovski to keep a tight grip on his party is leading, again to threats of schism and thus an urgent action to win back disenchanted members from its former period of rule. However, along with a lack of legitimacy among younger members, the sight of these old faces back in the spotlight has given the ruling party an easy chance to assail its opponents for having nothing better to offer. Seeking to prevent a debilitating schism, the main Macedonian opposition party, the SDSM, is reaching to core older members and advisors- some of whom who had indicated a desire to join or form other parties. This is the same dynamic that has always threatened the party, even when it was in power from 2002-2006.
